The Riviera Commission: Cannes, France

Nestled in the hills above Cannes, a fabulous villa is owned by a lady who knows what she wants when it comes to commissioning sculpture to enhance her gardens.

Whilst refurbishing and landscaping the property, the client asked for help in terms of featuring accent pieces as part of her redevelopment. Initially, the client selected the Mouse On A Swing sculpture for her Mediterranean garden, only to expand her requirements as her redesign progressed. In Summer 2019, three pieces were delivered and installed within the new grounds and were used to create a statement, but also reflected the character of the client.

 

The Mouse On A Swing sculpture was installed under a large oak tree adjacent to a newly created orchard. As a suspended piece, it was hand-made from resin rather than bronze for both practicality and safety.

The work is designed to showcase the mouse enjoying the high of a backswing and looks like he never wants it to end. A tensile wire is attached to a neighbouring tree to maintain his mid-air suspension.

 

These two bronze pugilists were installed atop the dry-stone wall shortly after the gated entrance of the property. These signed bronze sculptures are part of a limited edition of nine.  

 

Approaching the gates of the villa, guests are observed by a pair of owls from their perch on each gate post. One of the owls has a sweeping outstretched wing to welcome you through the front gate.

The commissioning client specified the owls to have diamanté eyes - they twinkle to those who arrive in the evening, catching headlight beams and bringing the arrival to life.

Owls are a particular favourite of the client and their installation provides both balance and entertainment at the same time.
