Chelsea Flower Show: London

Overview

“Stephen's sculptures have a distinct textural quality that lend themselves superbly to gardens.”

Diarmuid Gavin

In 2008 I was invited by the renowned award-winning garden designer Diarmuid Gavin to exhibit my bronze Mouse on a Ball sculpture within his Oceânico garden at the Chelsea Flower Show.

I was obviously honoured to be asked to take part and installed the piece under a tree canopy positioned behind a contemporary storage container made from wood with drop-down sides.

Diarmuid is known for creating the unexpected and as a consequence has many garden design awards under his belt. This garden was co-designed with Sir Terence Conran and won a bronze medal.

I managed to endure the long hours throughout the week and met some amazing people whilst standing in the mayday sun.

At this event, I caught the Chelsea bug and exhibited under my own name in 2009 with eight sculptures. Chelsea is an amazing experience but it does have its long hours and hard work, but it was all worth it. I sold well from the show and may attend again in the future – Covid withstanding.

The memories I still have is the laughter and enjoyment of thousands of people passing my exhibit enjoying the characters on show.
