National Trust: Charlecote Park, Warwickshire
“We knew that Stephen's amazing quirky sculptures would bring value and a fresh customer experience to Charlcote Park.”
Tim Harris I Head Gardener
Overlooking the River Avon on the edge of Shakespeare’s Stratford, Charlecote Park has been part of this corner of rural Warwickshire for centuries.
Previously, Stephen was a local resident and regular visitor to Charlcote and later became an artist in residence, exhibiting sculpture to the visiting public.
Because the Charlcote estate was open to roaming deer and sheep, it was critical that most if not all of the sculptures, remained out of reach for safety.
During this time, the Grounds Team were immensely helpful in their advice, support and physical help when it came to the installation process - making sure to benefit from the open space protected by the ha-ha.
After three years, Stephen’s partnership with the Charlecote team continued to develop further, as the decision was taken to relocate the Mouse On A Swing sculpture that had been installed under the monumental cedar tree to another tree much farther away. This allowed for a new Sculpture Trail to be introduced in the grounds, which then culminated Mouse On A Swing. This was particularly successful for families and younger visitors who were able to chart their progress, with a monthly competition for younger visitors where the lucky winner was presented with an original drawing of one of the pieces.
The trail provided the impetus for many younger visitors participating in fun outdoor activities in all weathers . . .
