Overview

“The question is, are we happy to suppose that our grandchildren may never be able to see a polar bear except in a picture book?”

Sir David Attenborough

Mother Earth is a project that Stephen started from his observations of animal life and particularly those who are suffering a decline in numbers and natural habitat across the world.

In response to that, Stephen created a sculpture of a mother polar bear standing on tiptoe - known as the Last Piece Of Ice, the piece depicts a powerful scenario that could well become reality in the near future.

In the sculpture, the bear cub clings desperately onto its mother's back for it’s protection, safety - and possibly it’s life. This next generation could potentially be the last, with the unknown threat of extinction looming on a watery horizon.  An emotive and poignant sculpture, it epitomises not only the plight of the polar bear but potentially, of all life on our planet.

Hopefully, this piece can in some way help focus our attention on how we behave today, in the knowledge of how it can have a significant and direct impact on future generations of animal life.  The piece is designed to help raise  awareness and insight to anyone who makes decisions that contribute to the health and sustainability of our planet.
